The two sketchbook illustrations below were drawn by Kim Jung Gi, a very famous South Korean Artist. He is in my all time top three artist list and amazes me to no ends. He free hand draws all of his sketches without looking at reference photos. In his website, he stated, "I observe things all the time. I don’t take references while I’m drawing, but I’m always collecting visual resources. I observe them carefully on daily basis, almost habitually. I study images of all sorts and genres." I did not believe that he didn't look at references or how he does not plan out his drawings at all because of how busy and complicated all of his sketches were. But after watching a youtube video where he is sketching on a blank wall with a black marker, I believed it. I still can not comprehend how perfectly he is able to create this fish-eye view on such detailed drawings. His subject matter is usually ordinary or military related because of how he served in the military in the past. I love how busy and natural the scenery and the people in his drawings look. His proportions are also slightly skewed creating a cartoony effect which I also admire. I usually think drawing tattoos on sketches of people are tacky and unnecessary but Kim Jung Gi makes it look absolutely amazing.
